Letter from the Incoming Actives Presidents

We are honored to be a part of the Cap and Gown community and are looking forward to continuing to get to know the current Actives, welcoming a new class of Cap and Gown women, and connecting with Cap and Gown Alumnae. This year we are especially grateful to have the opportunity to work with the incredible Cap and Gown women who serve on our Alumnae Board. We have already learned so much from their guidance in planning Tapping Tea and coordinating the fall recruitment and application process. We are eager for the other Actives to have similar opportunities to learn from them and the other inspiring women who compose the vast network of Gap and Gown Alumnae. We look forward to introducing our fellow Actives to the wealth of experience, warmth, and wisdom of Cap and Gown Alumnae through conversations at Winter Welcome and Spring Brunch as well as other informal events or meetings. We also hope to build a strong community among the Actives that will continue to enrich our lives in the years to come. We began the year with a dinner at Treehouse for our returning Actives and have received great ideas for future events. We hope any Alumnae interested in connecting with the current Actives will not hesitate to reach out to us. We would love to help you connect with the current Actives and we know they are eager to meet you. Finally, we want to recognize and extend our sincerest gratitude to our Vice President of Finance, the amazing Rachel Waltman. We are so grateful for everything you do behind the scenes,...

From the Outgoing Actives President

This last year was terrific for Cap & Gown! A huge and well-deserved shout-out goes to all the Alumnae Board Members who work tirelessly for the organization, to the previous Actives leadership, and to Vice Presidents Sara Silberstein and Nruthya Madappa. I know of no other group at Stanford that is as well supported by its alums and we students are so grateful for the time and effort you all give. It was a special joy to work with Kathy Chou, Alumnae Board President, Samantha Lasarow, 2010 Actives President, and Madison Gilbertson, Alumnae Board member. Sara, Nruthya, and I really wanted to build the Cap & Gown community this year so we focused on hosting events where our Actives could relax from the stresses of school and meet each other. We started off by delivering roses to each new Actives member at her dorm room when she was selected from a highly competitive applicant pool. Bonding over frozen yogurt on campus in the fall was a popular activity and the Actives class was able to get to know each other better. Winter quarter brought some rain, but also adorable puppies and relaxing massages during finals week. And in the Spring, Cap & Gown co-hosted a screening of “Miss Representation,” a documentary which examines how women are misrepresented in the media, and what we can do to combat this.                                                                                  ...

From the Incoming Actives President

It is an honor to be chosen to serve as this year’s President of Cap and Gown. I have been meeting weekly with Hannah Belitz (VP Mentorship) and Jacquelyn Wong (VP Finance) to plan programs for the 2012-2013 academic year. It is our intent to host events on campus which foster a sense of community while connecting Stanford women leader’s across generations. We were excited to introduce the new members of this year’s Active class at the Tapping Tea on November 2, 2012. I am sure that you will agree that this incoming class exemplifies Cap and Gown’s high standards of academics, community involvement and leadership. We have been busy planning and executing a number of events. On September 28, 2012, we participated in the Stanford Annual Fall Activities Fair. At the Activities Fair we educated undergraduate students about Cap and Gown’s mission of bringing together women who have demonstrated strong leadership and academic excellence throughout their time at Stanford. We are in the process of rolling out a mentorship program that will connect current Actives with Alumni members. The Actives are excited about the opportunity to meet with Alumni members to seek your advice on professional and personal development. We will also be organizing informal events throughout the year, where Actives can get to know each other with the objective of establishing life long friendships. I am looking forward to working with the Alumni Board to make 2012-2013 a truly memorable experience for all Cap and Gown members. If you have any questions, comments or recommendations, I can be reached via email at kglass@stanford.edu. Kristen...

Graduation Tea 2012

The Graduation Tea is a tradition that began in the 1990s as a way to honor Cap and Gown Graduating Actives. The Tea is an opportunity for the families and guests of our graduating Actives to learn more about their graduate’s experience in Cap & Gown. And, it is a time of leisure and respite from the bustle of the campus during Graduation weekend. In addition, our graduates were recognized with red and black honor cords to wear during the Graduation ceremonies and we celebrated their accomplishments with an ad in the Stanford Daily.  We welcome our newest alumnae!                                                                                                                                                       ...
